Understanding Battery Energy Storage Systems
A straightforward introduction to battery storage and its role in modern power infrastructure.
In focus · Naifaru Power Infrastructure project
Why islands are turning to battery storage
A battery energy storage system (BESS) stores electricity when it is available and releases it when it is needed. On an island grid, that simple idea does a lot of work: it smooths the variability of solar generation, supports voltage and frequency, and improves the reliability of supply.
Inside a storage system
A complete installation is more than batteries. It combines the battery units with power conversion, protection, control, and the connections that tie it into the existing network.
Transformers step the system up or down to match the network, and high- and low-voltage cable connections carry power between the storage, the distribution network, and consumers.
The Naifaru project
SQ Depot’s current power infrastructure work in Naifaru brings these pieces together:
- A 1.9 MWh battery energy storage system
- 1000 kVA and 1600 kVA transformers
- High-voltage and low-voltage cable connections
The project is ongoing, and it reflects a broader shift: as solar capacity grows across the Maldives, storage becomes the piece that makes the energy dependable.
